HEIDENHAIN ERN 430 Incremental Encoder Technical Guide
1. Product Positioning
HEIDENHAIN is a global leader in precision metrology. The ERN series are incremental rotary encoders, and the ERN 430 is a classic heavy-industry model thanks to its ruggedness and strong noise immunity. It is commonly found providing speed feedback on crane long-travel/trolley mechanisms, metallurgical roller tables, conveying equipment and machine-tool main spindles.
2. Typical Specifications
- Resolution: 1024 lines (1024 pulses/revolution); after 4× quadrature decoding the system gets 4,096 counting edges
- Supply voltage: 10–30 V DC wide-range
- Output: HTL push-pull (A, /A, B, /B plus Z and /Z), highly interference-resistant with cable runs over 100 m, directly matching PLC high-speed counter modules and VFDs
- Shaft type: hollow (blind) shaft, typically 12 mm bore, mounts directly onto the motor shaft with a spring stator coupling that prevents rotation — no external coupling needed, with excellent concentricity
- Connection: 0.8 m fixed cable with a 12-pin M23 circular connector (e.g. order code ERN 430 1024 80S12-03) — reliable wiring and high protection
- Protection: IP64/IP67 for dusty and splash environments
- Maximum speed: mechanically permissible speed above 12,000 r/min
3. Installation Points
1. For hollow-shaft mounting, observe the shaft-diameter tolerance required by the manufacturer (usually h7); never strike the encoder body — pull it in with the dedicated screw;
2. The encoder body is fixed via the elastic stator element, which prevents the housing from rotating with the shaft while absorbing shaft float; rotate by hand after mounting to confirm there is no binding;
3. Route signal cables separately from power cables and never in the same tray as VFD output cables; ground the shield at one end;
4. Verify A/B phasing after mounting: the count should increase on forward rotation; if direction is reversed, swap A and /A.
4. Common Faults and Replacement
Pulse loss is usually caused by a loose coupling or damaged cable; count jumps usually come from poor grounding introducing interference; no signal at all means checking supply voltage and connector wiring. When replacing, fully verify line count, bore, output circuit (TTL/HTL), cable length and connector pin count against the order code.
