ABB MCCBs in Industrial Power Distribution: Application and Selection
1. Function of the Molded Case Circuit Breaker
The MCCB provides both overload and short-circuit protection in low-voltage distribution systems: on overload the bimetallic strip bends to trip with a delay, while on short circuit the magnetic mechanism trips instantaneously. It protects cables, transformers and loads from overheating and short-circuit damage while isolating the faulty circuit to prevent an incident from spreading.
2. Features of the ABB Tmax XT Series
The ABB Tmax XT series covers 15 A–1,600 A with breaking capacity up to 200 kA, featuring a modular structure and rich accessories:
- Interchangeable trip units: thermomagnetic (TMD/TMA) for ordinary distribution; electronic (Ekip) supporting adjustable long-time, short-time, instantaneous and earth-fault protection;
- Complete accessories: shunt releases, undervoltage releases, auxiliary contacts, rotary handle operating mechanisms (e.g. RHE XT6 STAND handles), plug-in bases;
- Communication: Ekip communication modules connect to Modbus and PROFINET for telemetry and remote control.
3. Selection Points
- Rated current: choose frame size at 1.1–1.25 times load rated current; long-time pickup must cover load current
- Breaking capacity: the prospective short-circuit current at the installation point must be below the rated ultimate breaking capacity Icu — especially critical at transformer secondary bus-ties
- Number of poles: 3P for three-phase distribution, 4P with neutral protection
- Utilization category: Category A has no short-time withstand; Category B has short delay to enable selectivity coordination between upstream and downstream breakers, avoiding cascade tripping
- Mounting: fixed type is most economical; plug-in/draw-out types allow replacement without power shutdown
4. Maintenance and Replacement
After a trip, always investigate the fault cause — forced re-closing is prohibited. Press the test button once a year to check the trip mechanism. When replacing old models (such as ABB SACE F series), verify mounting dimensions, busbar spacing and accessory interfaces. HuaSpare Mall can provide old/new model benchmarking and complete accessory supply.
